Rule number one is that you have to work hard to find the right tones of black in clothing. Black is always OK to wear on skirts and trousers. If you have a black jacket with a fantastic cut, even if the color isn't exactly right, you can always brighten it up with a gorgeous scarf or shawl in the colors such as multiple shades of green (particularly jewel and turquoise,) oranges and of course purples. The same rule for black holds true for bright red, navy and pink. They're not necessarily on the the no-no list, but unless you have run across that perfect tone of these colors, they should probably be avoided. Earth tones such as dark and olive greens, beiges, browns, golds, camel and even orange reds are safer bets, but watch out that they don't have too much yellow for your skin tone.
