Goth fashion gets it's roots from the popular Medieval-Romance novels of the 1700's. Those novels coincided with a then current fascination for Gothic Architecture (which was so often incorporated into the books.) Because the theme of these books was most usually dark, and death was a prominent fixture in this fashionable fiction, London's Goth Fashion/Lifestyle/Music Movement that was started in the Post Punk 1980's was given this associative name.
